The Tales of Guy de Maupassant | 1964 Heritage Press | Illustrated by Gunter Böhmer | Sandglass & Slipcase
A handsome 1964 Heritage Press edition of The Tales of Guy de Maupassant, featuring translations by Lafcadio Hearn and others, an introduction by Justin O’Brien, and expressive watercolor illustrations by Gunter Böhmer.
This is exactly the kind of book that looks wonderful both on a classic bookshelf and displayed with the slipcase. The dark green cloth binding, gilt spine decoration, substantial 472-page format, and laid-in Heritage Press Sandglass give it that unmistakable mid-century fine-book character.
The original Maupassant stories include favorites such as “The Necklace,” “The Piece of String,” “Boule de Suif (Roly-Poly),” “The Old Man,” “The Signal,” “A Vendetta,” “The Jewelry,” and “My Uncle Jules.”

Condition
Very Good — Preloved Vintage
The book itself presents beautifully for its age. The green cloth remains attractive with gilt spine decoration intact. There is light handling/rubbing consistent with vintage use, particularly around the corners and edges.
The pages appear clean, bright, and intact, with the binding holding well. The original slipcase is present and functional but shows more noticeable age-related wear, including rubbing, edge wear, discoloration, and corner wear.
The Sandglass newsletter is also present, which is a particularly nice bonus for Heritage Press collectors.
Please review all photographs carefully, as they are part of the condition description.
Styling
This would be gorgeous styled in a traditional library, dark academia, French-inspired study, vintage literary collection, or mid-century bookshelf.
The dark green cloth and gilt lettering pair especially well with leather-bound classics, brass bookends, antique writing desks, framed botanical prints, and warm wood tones.
A wonderful choice for a Maupassant collector, classic-literature reader, Heritage Press collector, or anyone who appreciates beautifully produced vintage books.
